How It Works

همدیگر and یکدیگر have the same meaning. یکدیگر is the careful, written choice. همدیگر is the everyday one.

The verb کمک کردن takes به, not را: به همدیگر کمک کردیم. Check the verb's own preposition before you add را.

These words are different from با هم (together). با هم says that people do something at the same time. همدیگر says that each one acts on the other.

Two people joined by و count as a plural subject: احمد و فرید همدیگر را می‌شناسند (Ahmad and Farid know each other). The owned noun can be plural: کتاب‌های همدیگر (each other's books).

همدیگر needs two sides. When only one person acts on the other, use a plain object: احمد فرید را دید (Ahmad saw Farid).

  1. ما همدیگر را هر هفته می‌بینیم.

    We see each other every week.

    همدیگر را is the object of می‌بینیم.

  2. مریم و شبنم هر روز به همدیگر زنگ می‌زنند.

    Maryam and Shabnam call each other every day.

    به همدیگر follows the verb's own preposition.

  3. برادران باید به یکدیگر کمک کنند.

    Brothers should help each other.

    یکدیگر is the careful word, and the verb کنند is plural.

  4. همسایه‌ها در نوروز به خانهٔ همدیگر می‌روند.

    The neighbors visit each other's houses at Nowruz.

    خانهٔ همدیگر means each other's house.

  5. دوستان در باغ بابر یکدیگر را دیدند.

    The friends saw each other in Babur's Garden.

    یکدیگر را is the object, the same as همدیگر را.

Common Mistakes

  • Leaving out را when همدیگر is the object.

    ما همدیگر از مکتب می‌شناسیم.
    ما همدیگر را از مکتب می‌شناسیم.

    می‌شناسیم needs an object, so همدیگر takes را.

  • Using را with کمک کردن.

    ما همدیگر را کمک کردیم.
    ما به همدیگر کمک کردیم.

    کمک کردن takes به, not را.
