Who Feels or Experiences Something

Level 4

The person who feels something may be in the dative.

How It Works

In Hladno mi je, mi identifies who feels cold. The impersonal form hladno je does not change to match that person’s gender.

With sviđati se, the liked thing controls the verb: sviđa mi se knjiga but sviđaju mi se knjige. Mi remains dative in both.

English often begins these meanings with I: I am cold or I like the book. Translate the relationship, not the English subject position; use meni when you need to emphasize the experiencer.

Examples (3)

  1. Hladno mi je.

    I am cold.

    Mi is the dative experiencer.

  2. Sviđa mi se ova knjiga.

    I like this book.

Knjiga is the singular subject; mi names the person who likes it.

  3. Sviđaju joj se te pjesme.

    She likes those songs.

Plural pjesme selects sviđaju; joj is dative.
