It Is Easy or Hard to Do

Level 3

An infinitive can name what is easy or difficult.

How It Works

In this construction, the evaluation commonly has an impersonal neuter form such as lako, teško or važno. It does not agree with the person who experiences the difficulty.

Compare Teško mi je čekati and Teško joj je čekati. Mi and joj change, but teško remains the same. The infinitive names the activity.

A personal adjective construction such as Ana je spremna otići has a different agreement pattern. Do not transfer its feminine ending to the impersonal evaluation.

Examples (3)

  1. Lako je otvoriti ova vrata.

It is easy to open this door.

The infinitive phrase identifies the easy action.

  2. Teško mi je čekati.

It is hard for me to wait.

Mi names the experiencer in the dative.

  3. Važno nam je razumjeti pitanje.

It is important to us to understand the question.

Nam is dative and razumjeti remains an infinitive.
