da + Past: Unreal Condition
Unfulfilled Past Conditions
A da-clause in the perfect can describe a past condition that did not hold. A conditional in the main clause gives the unrealized result.
How It Works
The da-clause supplies the missing past condition: Da si nazvala, otvorio bih vrata. The interpretation is counterfactual when the context makes clear that the call did not happen.
Do not require conditional II merely because English uses “would have.” Croatian conditional I commonly carries the unrealized past result when the condition or a time expression makes the timeline clear.
Different time relationships are possible. A missed past event can have a present consequence: Da sam tada prihvatio posao, sada bih živio u Rijeci. Identify each clause’s time instead of assuming that both events must belong to the same period.
