jesti → jeo / jela; piti → pio / pila
Eating and Drinking in the Past
Jesti gives jeo/jela; piti gives pio/pila.
How It Works
For eating, use jeo, jela, jelo and plural jeli, jele, jela. For drinking, use pio, pila, pilo and plural pili, pile, pila.
Combine them with sam, si, je, smo, ste or su. The present stems jedem and pijem are not the stems onto which an ordinary past ending is simply attached.
These imperfective verbs describe eating or drinking. Prefixed forms such as pojesti and popiti add a bounded viewpoint and must be learned as related verbs.
Examples (3)
- Jutros sam jeo kruh.
This morning I ate bread.
Jeo indicates a male speaker.
- Ana je jela juhu.

Jela is feminine singular.
- Pila sam vodu, a Ivan je pio čaj.
I drank water, and Ivan drank tea.
Pila identifies the female speaker; pio agrees with Ivan.
