Valencian Retention of the Simple Past

Level 5

The periphrastic and simple past both narrate completed past events, with different regional and stylistic distributions.

How It Works

Va parlar and parlà can report the same completed speech event. The periphrastic past is the ordinary conversational form in much of Catalan, while the simple past remains current in some Valencian speech and in literary or historical narration elsewhere.

In Valencian areas retaining the simple past, aní, parlí and diguí can occur in an ordinary personal account, not only in a novel. Other Valencian speakers use the periphrastic past, so do not present one choice as universal across the whole territory. The grammatical event meaning remains completed past. Compare the regional form with vaig anar to recognize equivalence without forcing the speaker to abandon a legitimate local paradigm.
