Periphrastic past as ordinary spoken narrative past
Form the periphrastic past with vaig, vas, va, vam, vau or van plus an infinitive.
How It Works
Vaig parlar presents a completed past event: I spoke. The infinitive stays unchanged for every person, while the auxiliary identifies the subject. Unlike lexical anar to a destination, this construction has no a before the infinitive.
In a narrative, completed periphrastic past commonly advances a sequence: vam arribar, vam deixar les bosses i vam sortir. It presents each event as a whole rather than describing what was ongoing at some internal point.
The construction uses a specialized auxiliary paradigm, not every form of present lexical anar. Keep vam/vau for nosaltres/vosaltres in the neutral model, with vàrem/vàreu as standard variants. A direct object or place pronoun can precede the auxiliary or attach to the infinitive. Regional simple past may be equally conversational, so avoid treating this widely useful model as the only living past construction.
