Subjunctive with Restrictive Superlative Antecedents

Level 4

A superlative relative can use indicative or subjunctive according to how the comparison is presented.

How It Works

És el millor llibre que he llegit asserts an experience and uses indicative. És el millor llibre que hagi llegit presents the relative within a broader evaluative or nonasserted frame. The presence of millor does not automatically require subjunctive.

Expressions such as mai or fins ara can help define the comparison set. The tense must still fit the experiences being compared: he llegit and hagi llegit both locate reading before the present assessment.

Use indicative when simply reporting known facts about the selected item. Subjunctive is especially natural when the superlative frames an open range of possible comparisons. Avoid teaching the difference as a change in the book's objective quality or as a rule that one form is always wrong.

  2. És el millor llibre que hagi llegit mai.

It is the best book I have ever read.

  3. Era la persona més amable que hagués conegut.

She was the kindest person I had ever met.
