Simple Past as Literary or Regionally Retained
The periphrastic and simple past both narrate completed past events, with different regional and stylistic distributions.
How It Works
Va parlar and parlà can report the same completed speech event. The periphrastic past is the ordinary conversational form in much of Catalan, while the simple past remains current in some Valencian speech and in literary or historical narration elsewhere.
A formal historical account may use parlà, entraren or digué to maintain a compact narrative voice. Those simple-past forms report events rather than ongoing background, which can still use imperfect. Their stylistic markedness depends on the speaker's region: a simple form that sounds literary in Central conversation may be ordinary in part of Valencia. Recognize the paradigm without relabeling the entire tense as archaic or compulsory in writing.
