Periphrastic Past for Spoken Narration

Level 5

The periphrastic and simple past both narrate completed past events, with different regional and stylistic distributions.

How It Works

Va parlar and parlà can report the same completed speech event. The periphrastic past is the ordinary conversational form in much of Catalan, while the simple past remains current in some Valencian speech and in literary or historical narration elsewhere.

When retelling a sequence, each va/vam/van plus infinitive marks a completed event, while an imperfect form can supply background. Vam arribar, plovia i vam entrar separates two events from the ongoing weather. The auxiliary is not lexical movement: vam entendre contains no going anywhere. Do not insert a between the auxiliary and infinitive, even when the main verb itself is anar.
