Imperfect for background and habit
The imperfect can describe a past habit, ongoing activity or background state.
How It Works
De petit jugava al parc describes a childhood habit. Words such as sempre, sovint and cada dia often help establish repeated behavior, but they do not mechanically force one tense in every context.
A scene often combines habitual activity and background description: de petit anava a peu a l'escola, que era a prop de casa. Both imperfects describe the recurring or continuing situation rather than a single bounded event.
The imperfect can also place one action in progress when another interrupts it: cuinava quan va sonar el telèfon. Do not translate every imperfect with used to; was cooking fits the ongoing reading. Conversely, a repeated series with explicit completed boundaries may use completed past. Decide what part of the situation the narrator is presenting, rather than assigning tense solely from words such as sempre or cada dia.
