ho (pronom feble)
Neuter Clitic Ho
Ho replaces a whole idea, a clause, or a neutral expression such as això.
How It Works
No ho sé can mean I do not know that fact. Ho entenc can refer to a whole explanation rather than a masculine singular object. Ho is invariable; it does not become feminine or plural to match nouns mentioned inside the idea.
Ho can replace the content of a statement: la reunió s'ha ajornat; ho sabia. The noun reunió is feminine, but ho represents the whole postponement fact, not merely that noun. This explains why grammatical gender inside a clause does not change ho.
With a predicate, és professora? Sí, ho és replaces the attribute professora. A definite identifying predicate can behave differently, so do not extend this one pattern indiscriminately to every complement of ser. Ho also represents això or allò as neutral objects. In any placement, preserve the full form: ho he entès, entendre-ho, not an apostrophized h' form.
Examples (3)
- La reunió s’ha ajornat? No ho sabia.
Has the meeting been postponed? I did not know that.
- És professora? Sí, ho és.
Is she a teacher? Yes, she is.
- Això ho canvia tot.
That changes everything.
