haver-hi (impersonal invariant)

Invariant Existential Haver-hi

Level 3

Use singular haver-hi in the shared formal model, while recognizing regional agreement.

How It Works

Use hi ha before the thing you are introducing: hi ha pa, hi ha una botiga. Hi is part of the expression haver-hi; do not drop it just because you also name a place.

Use the singular formal model through tense and auxiliary changes: hi haurà reunions, hi ha hagut problemes and hi pot haver errors. The noun introduced by haver-hi is not treated as an ordinary agreeing subject in this model.

The IEC describes genuine regional agreement and identifies nonagreement as the consolidated formal use. Consequently, teach the singular pattern consistently without branding every dialectal plural as an unresolved grammar defect. Keep this separate from clauses such as els alumnes han arribat, whose plural subject requires han. The presence of haver alone does not make a clause an impersonal existential construction; hi and the clause's structure matter.

    There will be two meetings.

  2. Hi pot haver errors.

  3. Hi havia moltes preguntes pendents.

    There were many pending questions.
