Enclisis with infinitive, gerund, and affirmative imperative

Level 3

Infinitives, gerunds and affirmative commands take attached following weak pronouns.

How It Works

Compare mirar-lo, mirant-lo and mira'l. The first is an infinitive, the second a gerund, and the third an affirmative tu command. The grammatical object is the same; the verb form changes the attachment spelling at the boundary.

A consonant ending commonly uses a hyphen and full postverbal form, while a vowel ending can allow a reduced apostrophized form. Hi and ho do not reduce: anar-hi, mira-ho. With two pronouns, use the established combination rather than joining two independent forms mechanically.

Finite statements and negative commands normally place the group before the verb: el mira, no el miris. Thus the presence of an instruction is not enough to choose following placement; its polarity matters. In eligible infinitive or gerund periphrases, the whole group can sometimes move before the finite auxiliary.
