en (complement directe quantificat)

En with Quantified Objects

Level 5

En replaces the understood noun in a quantified object while the quantity remains.

How It Works

Compare vull dues pomes with en vull dues. The numeral or quantity still tells how much; en supplies the understood noun. Gender remains visible on a quantity such as dues when the noun is feminine.

A numeral can preserve gender after the noun disappears: dues refers to feminine items, while dos refers to masculine ones in the model used here. The pronoun en does not itself change. A detached noun introduced by de can clarify the reference, but adding en to a full ordinary direct-object phrase is not the same construction. Compare en necessito tres with necessito tres informes, each complete on its own.

Examples (3)

  1. De cadires, en faltaven dues.

    Two chairs were missing.

  2. N'hem rebut cinc.

We have received five of them.

  3. No en necessito cap més.

I do not need any more of them.
