els + Direct-Object Clitic
Els with Direct-Object Clitics
With a plural recipient, retain els and add the separate definite direct-object pronoun.
How It Works
Els as a dative means to them, regardless of the recipients' gender. Add el, la, els or les for the definite thing given: els el dono, els la dono, els els dono, els les dono. The repeated els in els els has two distinct jobs.
A full recipient phrase can establish the dative reference before the cluster: als membres del jurat, els la llegirem. Els is unchanged even if all recipients are women; la refers to the feminine singular item read. In els els presentarem, the first els is recipient and the second is masculine plural object. Spell both because formal clarity depends on retaining both functions rather than flattening every combination to els hi.
