Conditional for politeness
The conditional can soften a request, offer or personal preference.
How It Works
Voldria una taula expresses I would like a table more softly than vull una taula. Podries ajudar-me? asks for help without presenting ability as a blunt test. The conditional does not necessarily refer to a hypothetical condition that must be stated aloud.
Choose the person form for the addressee: podries addresses tu, podria can address vostè, and podríeu addresses vosaltres or vós. The infinitive after poder stays unchanged. A pronoun can attach to it or appear before the finite verb: em podries ajudar or podries ajudar-me.
Courteous framing can include si us plau, but the verb form alone does not guarantee the right tone in every situation. A simple present question can also be polite. Use the conditional when a softer degree of distance suits the exchange.
