Present of Voler and Poder
Voler expresses wanting; poder expresses ability, possibility or permission.
How It Works
Learn the present forms of voler: vull, vols, vol, volem, voleu, volen. Poder has puc, pots, pot, podem, podeu, poden. Their irregular first-person forms are especially common in requests.
Put an infinitive directly after either verb: vull sortir, puc entrar. Do not add a preposition merely because English uses to after want. Voler can also take a noun directly, as in vull aigua; poder normally needs an action or a recoverable action in context.
Puc entrar? can request permission, while no puc venir describes inability or a practical obstacle. Vull entrar says what the speaker wants and can sound more direct. For a softer request, voldria and podria are useful conditional forms to learn next.
