Reported Statements with Dir Que

Level 3

Dir que reports a statement, with person and time chosen from the reporting viewpoint.

How It Works

Diu que no pot venir reports a current statement without quoting the exact words. Que introduces the content clause and normally remains present in Catalan even where English can omit that.

If the report is anchored in the past, its future can become a conditional: va dir que arribaria tard. A previous event can use the pluperfect: va dir que ja havia arribat. Adjust pronouns and time words when the reference changes, but do not mechanically replace every tense if the speaker deliberately keeps the fact current.

Direct quotation preserves the original speaker's words; indirect reporting describes their content from a new perspective. Ask who each pronoun refers to and what day a word such as demà would mean before reusing it in a later report.
