ပါစေ
Wishing Someone Well
Many everyday wishes use ပါစေ: အဆင်ပြေပါစေ (Good luck) and ခရီးချောမောပါစေ (Have a safe trip).
How It Works
ပါစေ means "may it be". Burmese speakers use it for good wishes at birthdays, before trips, before exams and at New Year.
| Wish | English |
|---|---|
| ကျန်းမာပါစေ။ | Stay healthy. |
| ပျော်ရွှင်ပါစေ။ | Be happy. |
| အဆင်ပြေပါစေ။ | Good luck. / I hope it goes well. |
| ခရီးချောမောပါစေ။ | Have a safe trip. |
| စာမေးပွဲ အောင်ပါစေ။ | I hope you pass your exam. |
People often put two wishes together: ကျန်းမာပါစေ၊ ပျော်ရွှင်ပါစေ။ (Be healthy and happy.)
ပါစေ has no ရ. With ရ, ပါရစေ means "let me", which is a different thing.
At Thingyan, the Burmese New Year in April, people send each other wishes like these. A common reply is ကျေးဇူးပါ (Thank you), or the same wish back.
You can also wish for things that are not about a person: မိုးရွာပါစေ (I hope it rains). Many prayers at the pagoda end with ပါစေ too.
