Getting Someone to Do It

Level 3

With ပါ, you ask the listener to get someone else to do it: ကလေးတွေကို စောစောအိပ်ခိုင်းပါ။ (Make the children go to bed early.)

How It Works

ခိုင်း means "order" or "make". After another verb, it shows who wanted the action done.

Who asksWho does itActionEnglish
Mum asked me to go to the market.
The teacher had the students read.
The manager asked me to come in on Saturday.

When it is clear who does the job, leave that person out: (Mum asked me to go to the market).

For "told me not to", say it with မ… (The doctor told me not to drink coffee).

ပေး is different: you do the action yourself for someone else. In writing, စေ does the job of ခိုင်း.

On its own, ခိုင်း is a verb that means "tell someone to do a job": ဘယ်သူ ခိုင်းတာလဲ (Who told you to do it?).

Common Mistakes

  • Marking the person who does the job with က.

Only the one who gives the order takes က. The one who does the job takes ကို, so two က leave it unclear who asked whom.
