Adjectives From Nouns
English says city bus; Bulgarian turns град into an adjective: градски автобус. The main suffixes are -ен (дървен, wooden), -ов (ябълков, apple) and -ски (морски, sea).
How It Works
1. -ен: material, time of year, substance.
- дърво → дървен (wooden), камък → каменен (stone), злато → златен (golden)
- есен → есенен (autumn), зима → зимен (winter), пролет → пролетен (spring)
- вода → воден (water), сол → солен (salty)
Some -ен adjectives have an unstable е that drops outside the masculine: зимен → зимна. Others retain it: дървен, дървена, дървено, дървени. When the stem ends in -н, you get a double н: есенен, есенна, есенни (from есен); каменен, каменна (from the stem камен- of камък). See the disappearing ъ and е.
2. -ов: plants, fruit and some materials. дъб → дъбов (oak), ябълка → ябълков (apple), лимон → лимонов (lemon), роза → розов (rose, also pink). Some words take the variant -ев, as in слънце → слънчев (sunny). The same suffixes appear in surnames such as Петров.
3. -ски: belonging to or typical of. град → градски (city, urban), село → селски (village, rural), море → морски (sea), дете → детски (children's), приятел → приятелски (friendly). Some stems change: човек → човешки (human), мъж → мъжки (men's). These adjectives end in -ски in the masculine and -ска, -ско, -ски elsewhere; see adjectives in -ски.
4. Bulgarian avoids noun + noun. Where English puts one noun before another, Bulgarian normally uses an adjective (градски транспорт, city transport; зимна ваканция, winter holiday) or a preposition (чаша за вино, a wine glass; сок от портокали, juice made from oranges). Both портокалов сок and сок от портокали are natural.
5. Learn the adjective with its noun. The suffix belongs to the word, so learn each adjective as a pair with its noun. A few nouns have two adjectives with different meanings: дървен (made of wood) and дървесен (of trees, as in дървесна кора, tree bark).

Common Mistakes
Putting two nouns together as in English.
Купих дърво маса.Купих дървена маса.Bulgarian does not use a noun as a modifier the way English does. Turn дърво into the adjective дървена, which agrees with маса.
Keeping the е of -ен in the feminine.
Имаме зимена ваканция.Имаме зимна ваканция.The е before н drops outside the masculine: зимен, but зимна.
Adding -ски without changing the stem.
Това е човекска грешка.Това е човешка грешка.Before -ски, the к of човек changes: човешки, човешка.
