The Disappearing Ъ and Е
Some masculine words lose a vowel when an ending is added: добър (good, masculine) but добра, добро, добри. The same happens in малък — малка and орел — орли.
How It Works
1. What happens. Some masculine words have an ъ or е in the last syllable only when the word has no ending. When an ending is added, the vowel drops: добър (good) becomes добра, добро, добри.
2. Adjectives. This is where you meet it most, because every adjective agrees with its noun.
- With ъ: добър — добра (good), малък — малка (small), кратък — кратка (short), остър — остра (sharp), топъл — топла (warm), светъл — светла (bright).
- With е: умен — умна (clever), силен — силна (strong), болен — болна (ill), тъмен — тъмна (dark).
- The definite forms follow the same pattern: добрият, малкият, умният.
3. Nouns. The same vowels drop in the plural: ъгъл — ъгли (corner), орел — орли (eagle), петел — петли (rooster), вятър — ветрове (wind). Nouns in -ец lose their е: американец — американци, певец — певци (singer), палец — палци (thumb). The article keeps the vowel, in both the full and the short form: орелът, ъгълът, певецът; орела, ъгъла, певеца.
4. Past participles. Some л-participles behave the same way: влязъл — влязла, влезли (entered), донесъл — донесла (brought).
5. Not every ъ or е drops. Only some words have an unstable vowel. Зелен — зелена (green), червен — червена (red) and студен — студена (cold) keep their е. Learn each word with its feminine or plural form, as dictionaries list them: добър, добра.
Spelling tip: the dropping vowel also helps with spelling. Кръгъл (round) and топъл (warm) are written with ъ, not а, because the vowel disappears in кръгла and топла.

Common Mistakes
Keeping the ъ in the feminine form.
Тя е много добъра.Тя е много добра.The ъ of добър exists only in the masculine form without an ending. Before -а it drops: добра.
Keeping the ъ in the plural.
Имам две малъки деца.Имам две малки деца.Малък drops its ъ before any ending: малка, малко, малки.
Dropping a vowel that is stable.
Колата е зелна.Колата е зелена.Only some words have an unstable vowel. Зелен keeps its е: зелена, зелено, зелени.
