Abstract Nouns in -ост and -ство
-ост turns a quality into a noun: млад → младост (youth). -ство names a state, a relationship or a group: приятел → приятелство (friendship).
How It Works
1. Nouns in -ост (feminine). Most come from adjectives:
- млад → младост (youth), важен → важност (importance), честен → честност (honesty)
- възможен → възможност (possibility, chance), отговорен → отговорност (responsibility), сигурен → сигурност (security, certainty)
- Some have no everyday adjective next to them: радост (joy), скорост (speed).
Some adjectives in -ен have an unstable е that drops: сигурен → сигурност, not сигуреност (see the disappearing ъ and е). As feminine nouns ending in a consonant, they take the article -та and the plural -и: радостта, възможностите. In the singular the stress moves onto the article: младостта, радостта.
2. Nouns in -ство (neuter).
- From nouns for people: приятел → приятелство (friendship), дете → детство (childhood), човек → човечество (humanity, with к → ч)
- From adjectives: богат → богатство (wealth), равен → равенство (equality)
- Institutions and fields: министерство (ministry), общество (society), изкуство (art), производство (production)
They take the article -то and the plural -ства: приятелството, министерствата.
3. Agreement. Adjectives and pronouns follow the noun's gender: голяма радост, всяка възможност, нашето приятелство, цялото общество.
4. Other suffixes. Not every adjective uses -ост. Some take -ота (красив → красота, beauty; добър → доброта, kindness) or -ина (дълъг → дължина, length; тих → тишина, silence). Learn each noun as a word, and let its ending tell you its gender. Nouns from verbs are a separate group: see verbal nouns in -ние.
