след като
After Clauses
Use след като + a clause to say after: След като вечеряхме, гледахме филм (After we had dinner, we watched a film).
How It Works
1. След or след като? Before a noun or a time, use след: след вечеря (after dinner), след два часа (in two hours), след това (after that). Before a clause with its own verb, use след като.
2. In the past. Use the ordinary past tense in both parts:
- След като вечеряхме, гледахме филм. (After we had dinner, we watched a film.)
- След като завърши университета, тя започна работа в банка. (After she graduated, she started working at a bank.)
3. In the future. The след като clause uses the perfective present, and ще goes only in the main clause: Ще ти пиша, след като пристигна. The same goes for commands: Обади ми се, след като поговориш с шефа (Call me after you talk to the boss).
4. Habits. For something that happens regularly, use the present: След като се прибера, винаги пия чай (After I get home, I always drink tea).
5. Compare преди да. The opposite, преди да, is followed by a да-clause: Преди да тръгнеш, обади ми се. След does not work that way; it needs като.
6. A second meaning: since. След като can also mean since, given that: След като не искаш, няма да настоявам (Since you do not want to, I will not insist). The context shows which meaning is meant.
7. Commas. Put a comma between the two clauses, whichever comes first. See commas before subordinate clauses.
Examples (6)
- След като вечеряхме, гледахме филм.
After we had dinner, we watched a film.
- Ще ти пиша, след като пристигна.
I will write to you after I arrive.
Пристигна is a perfective present with no ще; the future is marked in the main clause.
- След като завърши университета, тя започна работа в банка.
After she graduated from university, she started working at a bank.
- След като се прибера, винаги пия чай.
After I get home, I always drink tea.
- Обади ми се, след като поговориш с шефа.
Call me after you talk to the boss.
- След като не искаш, няма да настоявам.
Since you do not want to, I will not insist.
Here след като means since, not after.
Common Mistakes
Leaving out като before a clause.
След вечеряхме, гледахме филм.След като вечеряхме, гледахме филм.След alone goes before a noun (след вечеря). Before a clause with a verb, use след като.
Adding ще in the след като clause.
Ще ти пиша, след като ще пристигна.Ще ти пиша, след като пристигна.In a time clause about the future, the verb has no ще. Ще belongs only in the main clause.
Building it like преди да.
След да вечеряме, ще излезем.След като вечеряме, ще излезем.Преди takes да, but след takes като.
