преди да + Verb

Before Doing Something

Level 3Sounds Like predi da

Преди да + a present-tense verb means before doing something: Обади се, преди да тръгнеш. (Call before you set off.)

How It Works

1. The shape. Преди да + a present-tense verb with the right person ending:

  • Измий си ръцете, преди да ядеш. (Wash your hands before you eat.)
  • Преди да замина, ще ти се обадя. (Before I leave, I'll call you.)

2. Past stories keep the present form. After да Bulgarian never uses the aorist, even if the whole event is in the past:

  • Преди да стана учител, работих в банка. (Before I became a teacher, I worked in a bank.)
  • Той си тръгна, преди да свърши филмът. (He left before the film ended.)

You will also meet the perfect after преди да, stressing that something has not yet been completed: преди да са узрели (before they have ripened).

3. Aspect. The verb after преди да is usually perfective, because it names one complete event: преди да тръгнеш, преди да отговориш.

4. Word order and commas. The преди да clause can come first or second, and a comma always separates it from the main clause: Помисли добре, преди да отговориш. / Преди да отговориш, помисли добре.

5. Related forms. Before a noun, use преди alone: преди обяд, преди ядене (before meals). For after, use след като with a full clause. Similar да-patterns are без да, вместо да and за да.

Common Mistakes

  • Using the aorist станах after преди да in this construction.

Преди да стана учител, работих в банка.

After да the verb never takes the aorist. Use the present form, even in a story about the past.

  • Leaving out да.

    Измий си ръцете, преди ядеш.
Измий си ръцете, преди да ядеш.

Before a verb, преди needs да. Without a verb, you can say преди ядене (before meals).
