като + Comparison or Role
Comparisons and Roles with Като
Като + a noun compares (like) or names a role (as): Пее като птица. (She sings like a bird.) Работи като учител. (He works as a teacher.)
How It Works
1. Comparison: like. Като + a noun or pronoun compares two things: Пее като птица. (She sings like a bird.) After an adjective it means as ... as: бял като сняг (as white as snow), силен като бик (as strong as a bull).
2. Role: as. Като + a noun without the article names a role or function: Работи като учител. (He works as a teacher.) Използвам стаята като кабинет. (I use the room as a study.)
3. Role or comparison? A noun without the article usually names a role. With the article it refers to a particular person or thing and makes a comparison: Работи като учител (He works as a teacher) but Говори като учителя ми (He talks like my teacher).
4. Pronouns after като. Use the full object form of the personal pronoun: като мен (like me), като теб (like you), като него, като нея, като нас. See full object pronouns.
5. No comma. A short comparison or role phrase with като is not set off by a comma: Пее като птица. A comma appears when като starts a separate clause (a time clause) or an added list of examples: Някои плодове, като ябълки и круши, растат и тук. (Some fruits, such as apples and pears, grow here too.)
6. Като or както? Before a noun or pronoun, use като. Before a whole clause of manner, standard Bulgarian prefers както: Направи го, както ти казах. (Do it the way I told you.) For as if, see сякаш and като че ли.
