Level 3Sounds Like hilâda i milion

Say хиляда for 1,000 but две хиляди for 2,000. Милион works like a masculine noun: един милион, три милиона.

How It Works

1. Thousands. хиляда (1,000), две хиляди (2,000), три хиляди, пет хиляди, десет хиляди, сто хиляди. Because хиляда is feminine, 2,000 uses две, not два (see два/две).

2. Millions and billions. един милион, два милиона, пет милиона, един милиард, три милиарда. After a number these masculine nouns take the count form in -а. Without a number, use the ordinary plural: милиони хора (millions of people), хиляди хора (thousands of people).

3. Where и goes. Put и before the last part of the number:

  • 1,500: хиляда и петстотин
  • 2,005: две хиляди и пет
  • 3,015: три хиляди и петнайсет
  • 5,127: пет хиляди сто двайсет и седем

4. The noun after the number. Masculine nouns keep the count form: хиляда долара, два милиона долара. For people, you can say две хиляди души (two thousand people).

5. Years. Only the last word of a year is an ordinal: през 2026 година is read през две хиляди двайсет и шеста година, and 1989 is хиляда деветстотин осемдесет и девета година. See days, months and dates.

6. Written and spoken forms. In writing you often see двадесет and тридесет; in speech двайсет and трийсет are usual. Both are accepted (see numbers above ten).

    Only the last word, девета, is an ordinal.

  5. Хиляди хора излязоха на площада.

    Thousands of people came out onto the square.

  6. Филмът е гледан от два милиона души.

    The film has been watched by two million people.

Common Mistakes

  • Keeping хиляда in the singular after a number.

    Две хиляда души.
    Две хиляди души.

    After another number, хиляда becomes the plural хиляди.

  • Leaving милион without the count form.

    Три милион души.
    Три милиона души.

    Милион is a masculine noun, so after a number it takes the count form милиона.

  • Using the masculine два before хиляди.

    Два хиляди.
    Две хиляди.

    Хиляда is feminine, so the number before it is две.
