Feminine Nouns Ending in a Consonant
Most nouns ending in a consonant are masculine, but some are feminine: нощ (night), сол (salt), пролет (spring), радост (joy). They take -та: нощта́, and adjectives use feminine forms: Лека нощ!
How It Works
1. Which nouns.
- Suffix -ост / -ест (abstract nouns): радост (joy), младост (youth), възможност (opportunity), скорост (speed), свежест (freshness). This means the suffix, not any word that ends in those letters: мост (bridge), гост (guest) and тест (test) are masculine.
- Words to learn: нощ (night), сол (salt), пролет (spring), есен (autumn), любов (love), кръв (blood), вечер (evening), песен (song), мисъл (thought), помощ (help), част (part).
2. The article -та. Add -та as with other feminine nouns (see the feminine article): нощта, солта, пролетта, помощта. The stress moves onto the article: нощта́, радостта́. When the noun ends in -т, you write two т: радост → радостта.
3. Agreement. Adjectives and pronouns take their feminine forms: Лека нощ! (Good night!), голяма радост (great joy), тази есен (this autumn). The set greeting добър вечер is the exception (see time-of-day greetings).
4. Plural. These nouns add -и: нощи, радости, възможности. Some drop a vowel: песен → песни, мисъл → мисли (see the disappearing ъ and е).
Examples (6)
- Лека нощ!
Good night!
Нощ is feminine, so the adjective is лека.
- Пролетта е любимият ми сезон.
Spring is my favourite season.
- Подай ми солта, моля.
Pass me the salt, please.
- Това е добра възможност.
This is a good opportunity.
Every noun with the suffix -ост is feminine.
- Нощта беше студена.
The night was cold.
The adjective студена agrees with the feminine noun.
- Благодаря ти за помощта.
Thank you for the help.
Common Mistakes
Giving the noun a masculine article.
нощътнощтаНощ is feminine, so its article is -та, not the masculine -ът.
Writing only one т before the article.
радостарадосттаThe noun радост already ends in т, and the article -та adds another one.
Using a masculine adjective with a feminine noun.
студен нощстудена нощThe ending of нощ looks masculine, but the noun is feminine, so the adjective takes -а.
