Adjectives That Stay the Same

Level 1Sounds Like chōṭa ā baṛa

Adjectives like छोट and बड़ stay the same for every noun.

How It Works

In Hindi you must change छोटा to छोटी or छोटे. In Bhojpuri the common adjectives stay as they are.

AdjectiveMeaningExample
छोटsmallछोट घर, छोट गाड़ी
बड़bigबड़ घर, बड़ दुकान
नीकgoodनीक लइका, नीक किताब
पुरानoldपुरान घर, पुरान साड़ी
लमहरtall, longलमहर आदमी, लमहर सड़क

The same word also works after the noun, before बा: घर बड़ बा (the house is big).

Some adjectives take -का or -की to mean the one that is big or small, such as बड़का and छोटकी. That is a separate pattern, taught later.

Bhojpuri keeps the plain adjective with any noun.

  • Using the Hindi adjective.

    बड़ा घर
    बड़ घर

    Before a noun you describe, write बड़: बड़ घर. बड़ा means very or a lot: बड़ा मीठ.
