Banaras Bhojpuri
Around Varanasi, speakers say हउवे for is and count with ठो.
How It Works
Banarasi Bhojpuri is the speech around Varanasi in eastern Uttar Pradesh. It is real Bhojpuri. Most of its grammar is the same as in Ara. A few forms stand out.
| Banarasi | Ara | Meaning |
|---|---|---|
| हउवे | ह, बा | is |
| हउवा | हवऽ | you are (friendly) |
| ठो | गो | counting word |
The Banarasi "is" covers both who something is and where it is. You will hear it in films, songs and in the city.
Do not mix forms from two places in one speech. If you learn Ara Bhojpuri, keep ह, बा and गो, and recognise the Banarasi forms when you meet them.
