тады як

Whereas with Тады Як

Level 5Sounds Like tady âk

(I love the sea, whereas my sister loves the mountains.)

How It Works

Тады on its own means then. Together with як it becomes one conjunction, тады як, which sets two facts side by side and shows how they differ: Я люблю мора, тады як сястра любіць горы. (I love the sea, whereas my sister loves the mountains.)

Same time, different facts. The two facts usually hold at the same time, so тады як is close to English while in its contrast sense: Мы толькі прачнуліся, тады як бабуля ўжо напякла бліноў. (We had only just woken up, while Grandma had already baked pancakes.)

This longer conjunction means the same and is just as common: Брат ужо на пенсіі, у той час як сястра яшчэ працуе. (My brother is already retired, while my sister still works.)

Word order and commas. The тады як clause normally comes second. Always put a comma before тады як. It is more common in writing than in conversation. In everyday speech, the simple а often does the same job: Я люблю мора, а сястра любіць горы.

Not a time sequence. Тады як does not mean and then. To say what happened next, use потым or пасля таго як.

Common Mistakes

  • Leaving out the comma before тады як.

Тады як starts a new clause of a complex sentence, so a comma always stands before it.

  • Using тады як to mean and then.

The intended meaning is I brushed my teeth and then went to bed. Тады як only contrasts two facts; it does not put events in order. Use потым for the next step.
