з таго часу як
Since with З Таго Часу Як
З таго часу як means since (the time when): З таго часу як ён пераехаў, мы не бачыліся. (Since he moved, we have not seen each other.)
How It Works
З таго часу як literally means from that time as. It names the moment when a state began: З таго часу як ён пераехаў, мы не бачыліся. (Since he moved, we have not seen each other.)
Present tense for a state that continues. English says we have been friends since.... Belarusian simply uses the present: Мы сябруем з таго часу, як пазнаёміліся ў школе. (We have been friends since we met at school.)
Counting time. With a length of time, use прайшло: Прайшло пяць гадоў з таго часу, як мы скончылі ўніверсітэт. (Five years have passed since we graduated.) Compare час + таму, which counts back from now.
Commas. When the clause comes first, keep the conjunction together and put the comma after the whole clause: З таго часу як я кінуў паліць, мне лягчэй дыхаць. When it comes second, the comma can stand before the whole conjunction or before як. Putting it before як stresses the time: Мы сябруем з таго часу, як пазнаёміліся.
Same meaning. З той пары як is an equally good variant. З тых пор як also occurs, though less often.
Only time, never a reason. English since can also mean because. З таго часу як never does. For a reason, use паколькі. For one event that simply came after another, use пасля таго як.
