хоць / хаця
Although with Хоць and Хаця
Хоць and хаця mean although: Хоць было холадна, мы пайшлі гуляць. (Although it was cold, we went for a walk.)
How It Works
Хоць and хаця introduce a concession: something that is true but does not change the result. Both mean although or even though.
- Хоць было холадна, мы пайшлі гуляць. (Although it was cold, we went for a walk.)
- Мы пайшлі гуляць, хаця ішоў дождж. (We went for a walk although it was raining.)
Which one? Хоць is the neutral word for writing and speech. Dictionaries mark хаця as conversational, but it means exactly the same thing.
Order and commas. The хоць clause can come before or after the main clause. It is always separated by a comma. See commas in complex sentences.
Хоць і … але. For stronger contrast, add і after хоць and put але (or а) in the other part: Дом хоць і стары, але ўтульны. (The house may be old, but it is cozy.) This pair is standard Belarusian.
With a noun, use нягледзячы на. Хоць joins a whole clause. Before a noun, use нягледзячы на: Нягледзячы на холад, мы пайшлі гуляць.
Another meaning: at least. As a particle before a word, хоць means at least: Дай мне хоць кавалачак хлеба. (Give me at least a little piece of bread.) See also хоць бы.
The Russian word хотя is not Belarusian.
