пасля таго як

After with Пасля Таго Як

Level 4Sounds Like paslâ tago âk

Пасля таго як + a clause = after something happened: Пасля таго як мы павячэралі, мы пайшлі гуляць.

How It Works

Пасля таго як joins a clause that happens first. The main clause says what happens next.

Clause or noun? Before a noun, пасля alone takes the genitive: пасля вячэры (after dinner); see пасля with the genitive. Before a clause with its own verb, you need the full пасля таго як.

Aspect. The first action is usually complete, so its verb is usually perfective: павячэралі, скончыў, пераехала.

Talking about the future. English says after I finish with a present tense. Belarusian uses the perfective future: Пасля таго як я скончу, я патэлефаную. (After I finish, I will call.) The same thing happens with калі.

Commas.

  • If the clause comes first, the comma goes after the whole clause. Do not split the conjunction: Пасля таго як мы павячэралі, мы пайшлі гуляць.
  • If the clause comes second, put the comma before the whole conjunction: Ён пачаў лепш спаць, пасля таго як кінуў паліць. To stress the word after, you may put the comma before як instead: Ён патэлефанаваў толькі пасля таго, як усё скончылася.

Related time words. For before, use перш чым. For as soon as, use як толькі. For ever since, use з таго часу як.
