рад / павінен / варты
Short Adjectives Рад, Павінен and Варты
These words describe the subject and agree with it: a man says Я рад, a woman Я рада, a group Мы рады (I am glad, we are glad).
How It Works
These three words come after the subject, with no verb in the present, and agree with it like any adjective.
- glad: рад or рады (masculine), рада (feminine), рады (plural)
- should, must: павінен (masculine), павінна (feminine and neuter), павінны (plural)
- worth: варты (masculine), вартая (feminine), вартае (neuter), вартыя (plural)
Рад: glad. It is followed by an infinitive, a што-clause, or a dative for the thing or person you are glad about:
- Я рад цябе бачыць. (I am glad to see you.)
- Мы рады, што вы прыехалі. (We are glad you came.)
- Мама была рада падарунку. (Mom was glad about the present.)
For a man, рад is the usual form, but рады is also used: Я рады, што ты тут is also correct. A woman always says рада.
Павінен: should, must. It has only these short forms and is followed by an infinitive: Яна павінна вярнуцца а сёмай. (She should be back at seven.) It can also mean something is expected: Цягнік павінен хутка прыйсці. (The train should arrive soon.) Its meaning is compared with мусіць in мусіць and павінен.
Варты: worth. It takes the genitive: Фільм варты ўвагі. (The film is worth attention.) Before a clause, use таго, каб: Гэты горад варты таго, каб яго пабачыць. (This city is worth seeing.) Do not mix it up with варта + infinitive, which never changes: Варта паспрабаваць.
Past and future. Add быць, which also agrees: Я быў рад, яна была рада, мы былі рады; Ён павінен быў патэлефанаваць (He was supposed to call); Мы будзем рады вас бачыць (We will be glad to see you). See the past of быць.
With polite Вы to one person, use the plural: Вы павінны паказаць пашпарт. See agreement with polite Вы.

Common Mistakes
Using the masculine form for a female speaker.
Я рад, што ты прыйшоў.Я рада, што ты прыйшоў.When a woman is speaking, рад must agree with her: рада. The same goes for павінна and вартая.
Putting the thing after варты in the accusative.
Гэты фільм варты ўвагу.Гэты фільм варты ўвагі.Варты takes the genitive: варты ўвагі, варты грошай. The accusative ўвагу is wrong here.
Leaving павінен unchanged for a feminine subject.
Яна павінен вярнуцца а сёмай.Яна павінна вярнуцца а сёмай.Павінен agrees with the subject like an adjective: ён павінен, яна павінна, яны павінны.
