мусіць / павінен
Must with Мусіць and Павінен
Мусіць is a verb meaning to have to: Я мушу ісці (I have to go). Павінен is a word that agrees like an adjective and means should, must: Ты павінен адпачыць (You should rest).
How It Works
1. Мусіць: to have to. It is a second-conjugation verb with с → ш in the я form: мушу, мусіш, мусіць, мусім, мусіце, мусяць; past мусіў, мусіла, мусілі. It often means circumstances leave no choice: Я мушу ісці, у мяне цягнік (I have to go, I have a train). Ён мусіў застацца дома (He had to stay home).
2. Павінен: should, must. It has only short forms and agrees with the subject (see short adjectives): ён павінен, яна павінна, яно павінна, мы, вы, яны павінны. A woman says я павінна, a man я павінен. It expresses a duty or what is expected: Ты павінен адпачыць (You should rest), Вы павінны паказаць пашпарт (You must show your passport).
3. Past and future of павінен. Add a form of быць (see past of быць): Я павінен быў працаваць (I was supposed to work), Яна павінна была патэлефанаваць (She was supposed to call), Ты павінен будзеш прыйсці (You will have to come).
4. Choosing. The two often overlap. Мусіць leans toward outside pressure; павінен toward duty, advice and expectation: Ён павінен хутка прыйсці (He should arrive soon). For a neutral need to with a dative person, see мне трэба.
Watch out: set off by commas, мусіць means probably: Ён, мусіць, ужо дома (He is probably home already). See мусіць as a parenthetical word.

Common Mistakes
Using мусіць as if it never changed.
Я мусіць ісці.Я мушу ісці.Мусіць is a verb, so it takes a personal ending: мушу for я, мусіш for ты. With commas, мусіць means probably, which is a different meaning.
Not matching павінен to a feminine subject.
Яна павінен адпачыць.Яна павінна адпачыць.Павінен agrees like an adjective: павінен for masculine, павінна for feminine and neuter, павінны for plural.
Leaving out быць in the past.
Учора я павінен працаваць.Учора я павінен быў працаваць.Павінен has no past form of its own. Add быў, была, было or былі to move it into the past.
