Can with Магчы and Умець

Level 2Sounds Like magčy í ŭmecʹ

English can has two Belarusian partners. Магчы: circumstances allow it (Я магу прыйсці заўтра). Умець: you know how (Я ўмею плаваць).

How It Works

1. Магчы: possible right now. Use it for time, strength, permission and circumstances: Я магу прыйсці заўтра (I can come tomorrow), Сёння я не магу, я працую (I can't today, I'm working), Ты можаш мне дапамагчы? (Can you help me?).

Forms of магчы. The stem changes between г and ж: магу, можаш, можа, можам, можаце, могуць. Past: мог, магла, магло, маглі.

2. Умець: a learned skill. Use it for things you know how to do: Я ўмею плаваць (I can swim), Яна ўмее добра гатаваць (She can cook well), Ты ўмееш чытаць па-беларуску? (Can you read Belarusian?). Forms: умею, умееш, умее, умеем, умееце, умеюць; past умеў, умела, умелі.

3. Spelling у/ў. Умець begins with у, which becomes ў after a vowel (see у and ў after a vowel): Я ўмею, Яна ўмее, but Ён умее.

4. Both can meet. Я ўмею плаваць, але сёння не магу: вада халодная. (I can swim, but I can't today: the water is cold.) To negate, put не before the verb: не магу, не ўмею. For permission as a rule, also see можна and нельга.

    I can come tomorrow.

    Possibility: my plans allow it.

  2. Ты можаш мне дапамагчы?

    Can you help me?

    Можаш is the ты form of магчы.

  3. Сёння я не магу, я працую.

    I can't today, I'm working.

    Circumstances stop you, so use магчы.

  4. Я ўмею плаваць.

    I can swim.

    A learned skill; у becomes ў after the vowel in я.

  5. Яна ўмее добра гатаваць.

    She can cook well.

    Cooking is a skill, so умець.

  6. Я ўмею плаваць, але сёння не магу: вада халодная.

    I can swim, but I can't today: the water is cold.

    The skill is there, but the situation does not allow it.

Common Mistakes

  • Using умець for a possibility instead of a skill.

    Я не ўмею прыйсці заўтра.
    Я не магу прыйсці заўтра.

    Coming tomorrow depends on your plans, not on a skill you learned, so it takes магчы.

  • Writing у instead of ў after a vowel.

    Яна умее плаваць.
    Яна ўмее плаваць.

    After a word ending in a vowel, the first у of умець is written ў.

  • Using the wrong person form of магчы.

    Ты магу нам дапамагчы?
    Ты можаш нам дапамагчы?

    Магу is only for я. With ты the form is можаш, with the stem changing from г to ж.
