Declining Surnames

Level 5Sounds Like prozvíščy: sklanenne

Men's surnames decline (у Максіма Багдановіча); women's surnames ending in a consonant do not (з Ганнай Карповіч).

How It Works

Belarusian surnames decline, but which ones depends on the person's sex and the ending.

Ending in a consonant (-іч, -евіч, -ук, -ец and others): a man's surname declines like a masculine noun; a woman's never changes.

  • у Максіма Багдановіча, з Уладзімірам Караткевічам
  • з Ганнай Карповіч, у Ніны Асіповіч
  • Андрэю Кавалю, but Вользе Каваль

Ending in -ка, -га, -ха (Каваленка, Глінка): a man's surname declines, like masculine nouns in -а; a woman's usually does not: ліст ад Леаніда Каваленкі, but ліст ад Дар'і Каваленка.

Other surnames in -а (Купала, Крапіва): these decline for both men and women: вершы Янкі Купалы.

Adjective-type surnames. Пятроў / Пятрова, Барадзін / Барадзіна and -скі / -ская decline for both. They mix noun and adjective endings: у Сяргея Пятрова, з Ірынай Пятровай.

Never declined: surnames in -ых / -іх (Бялых), in stressed -о (Дубко), and those that match a neuter noun (Масла).
