Masculine Nouns in -а

Masculine Nouns Ending in -а

Level 3Sounds Like nazoŭníkí mužčynskaga rodu na -a

A word like бацька looks feminine, but it names a man, so everything that agrees with it is masculine: мой бацька быў (my father was). Its instrumental is masculine too: з бацькам (with my father).

How It Works

1. Agreement is masculine. Possessives, adjectives and past-tense verbs use masculine forms: мой бацька, добры мужчына (a good man), Дзядуля прыйшоў (Grandpa has come).

2. Case endings. These nouns are stressed on the stem:

  • Genitive -ы/-і: бацькі, мужчыны, дзядулі
  • Dative -у/-ю: бацьку, тату, дзядулю
  • Accusative -у/-ю: Я бачу бацьку, Я люблю дзядулю
  • Instrumental -ам/-ем: з бацькам, з татам, з дзядулем
  • Locative: -у/-ю for family words such as аб бацьку, аб тату, аб дзядулю; мужчына takes -е: аб мужчыне

3. Nouns stressed on the ending. A few words for men are stressed on the ending, such as старшыня (chairperson). They stay closer to the feminine pattern: старшыні, старшынёй.

4. The animate accusative. A masculine noun for a person usually borrows its genitive as the direct object (Я бачу брата). These nouns do not: they take -у/-ю, so you say Я бачу тату, not таты (see animate accusative).

Tip: the plural бацькі usually means "parents": Мае бацькі жывуць у Брэсце (My parents live in Brest).

My uncle has a big garden.

    Genitive: дзядзька → дзядзькі.

  3. Я напісаў ліст дзядулю.

I wrote a letter to Grandpa.

    Dative: дзядуля → дзядулю.

  4. Я вельмі люблю тату.

    Accusative: тата → тату.

Common Mistakes

  • Using feminine agreement because the noun ends in -а.

    Мая бацька працуе ў Мінску.
    Мой бацька працуе ў Мінску.

Бацька names a man and is masculine, so the possessive is мой.

  • Using the feminine instrumental ending -ай.

    Я гуляў з бацькай.
    Я гуляў з бацькам.

These nouns take the masculine instrumental ending -ам (or -ем after a soft consonant).

  • Using the feminine dative ending -е.

    Трэба дапамагчы бацьке.
    Трэба дапамагчы бацьку.

In the dative these nouns take -у/-ю like masculine nouns, not -е like мама → маме.
