Plural Dative, Instrumental and Locative

In the plural, three cases share one easy pattern for all genders: -ам (to), -амі (with), -ах (in, about): сябрам, з сябрамі, аб сябрах.

How It Works

1. One pattern for all genders. Masculine, feminine and neuter nouns share these plural endings:

  • студэнт → студэнтам, студэнтамі, (аб) студэнтах
  • кніга → кнігам, кнігамі, (у) кнігах
  • сябар → сябрам, сябрамі, (аб) сябрах
  • госць → гасцям, гасцямі, (аб) гасцях
  • дзень → дням, днямі, (у) днях

2. Hard or soft? If the plural ends in -ы, use -ам/-амі/-ах. If it ends in -і after a soft consonant, use -ям/-ямі/-ях. Ж, ш, ч, р and ц are always hard, so they take the а-set: сябрам, плошчам, вуліцам. Nouns in г, к, х take -і in the plural but still use the а-set: кнігам, вёскам.

3. Watch the stress. The stress often moves onto the ending in the plural, and akanye then changes the spelling: горад → гарады → гарадам, у гарадах.

4. Special forms. людзі → з людзьмі, дзеці → з дзецьмі. Some nouns have two instrumentals: дзвярамі or дзвярмі (doors), вачамі or вачыма (eyes).

5. Where you use them. Dative for the person you give or write to: Я пішу лісты сябрам. Instrumental after з (with): з сябрамі. Locative after у, на, аб, пры: у гарадах, на плошчах. Adjectives take -ым, -ымі, -ых in these cases, or -ім, -імі, -іх after a soft consonant or г, к, х: з добрымі сябрамі, у вялікіх гарадах.

  1. Я пішу лісты сябрам.

    I write letters to my friends.

    Dative plural: сябры → сябрам.

  2. У суботу я гуляю з сябрамі.

    On Saturday I hang out with my friends.

    Instrumental plural after з: сябрамі.

  3. У вялікіх гарадах шмат машын.

    There are many cars in big cities.

    Locative plural: гарады → у гарадах.

  4. Мы размаўлялі з людзьмі на вуліцы.

    We talked with people on the street.

    Людзі has the special instrumental людзьмі.

  5. Я люблю праводзіць час з дзецьмі.

    I love spending time with children.

    Дзеці has the special instrumental дзецьмі.

  6. Мы дзякуем гасцям за падарункі.

    We thank the guests for the gifts.

    A soft stem takes -ям: госці → гасцям.

Common Mistakes

  • Using a regular ending for людзі or дзеці.

    Я гуляю з дзецямі.
    Я гуляю з дзецьмі.

    Дзеці and людзі have special instrumental forms: дзецьмі, людзьмі.

  • Spelling a stressed plural ending with о.

    Мы жывём у вялікіх горадах.
    Мы жывём у вялікіх гарадах.

    In the plural the stress falls on the ending, so the unstressed о of горад is written а: гарадах.

  • Using the locative ending where the dative is needed.

    Я пішу лісты сябрах.
    Я пішу лісты сябрам.

    The person you write to is in the dative: -ам. The ending -ах is the locative and needs a preposition such as у or аб.
