Patronymics
Formal address uses the first name and the patronymic: Іван Міхайлавіч, Ганна Іванаўна. Men take -авіч / -евіч and women take -аўна / -еўна: Добры дзень, Ганна Іванаўна!
How It Works
The імя па бацьку (patronymic) is made from the father's first name. People use first name + patronymic to address teachers, doctors, colleagues and older people politely, together with polite Вы.
Forming it.
- After a hard consonant: -авіч (men), -аўна (women): Іван → Іванавіч, Іванаўна; Уладзімір → Уладзіміравіч, Уладзіміраўна. Because р is always hard, Ігар gives Ігаравіч, Ігараўна (always-hard р).
- After a name ending in -й: -евіч, -еўна: Сяргей → Сяргеевіч, Сяргееўна; Мікалай → Мікалаевіч, Мікалаеўна; Андрэй → Андрэевіч, Андрэеўна.
- A few names change their stem: Міхаіл → Міхайлавіч, Міхайлаўна.
- Under stress, а is written о (akanye): Пётр → Пятровіч, Пятроўна.
The women's suffix has ў: -аўна, -еўна, not the Russian -овна, -евна.
Case forms. Men's patronymics decline like masculine nouns: Іванавіча, Іванавічу, Іванавічам. Women's decline like feminine nouns in -а: Іванаўны, Іванаўне, Іванаўну, Іванаўнай. The first name declines too: Я пагаварыў з Ганнай Іванаўнай.
In documents, the order is surname, first name, patronymic. Yakub Kolas was born Канстанцін Міхайлавіч Міцкевіч. Another polite option is спадар or спадарыня with a surname. When you call someone, the nominative is normal: Ганна Іванаўна, пачакайце!
