г, к, х → з, ц, с before -е
Г, К and Х Before -е
г → з, к → ц, х → с before the dative/locative ending: кніга → у кнізе, рука → на руцэ, бераг → на беразе.
How It Works
The three changes:
- г → з: кніга → у кнізе (in the book), нага → на назе (on the leg), Вольга → Вользе (to Volha), Прага → у Празе (in Prague).
- х → с: муха → на мусе (on the fly), страха → на страсе (on the roof).
- к → ц: рука → на руцэ (on the hand), рака → на рацэ (on the river), дачка → дачцэ (to the daughter).
-э or -ы after ц? Ц is always hard (see always-hard consonants), so the ending cannot be written -е. When the ending is stressed, it is -э: руцэ, рацэ, дачцэ. When it is unstressed, it is -ы: сумка → у сумцы, лодка → у лодцы, вёска → у вёсцы.
Where it happens:
- Feminine nouns in -а in the dative and locative (the two forms are the same): Я дала кнігу дачцэ, Адказ ёсць у кнізе.
- Masculine nouns in г and х that take -е in the locative: бераг → на беразе, паверх → на паверсе. Masculine nouns in к usually take -у and do not change: у парку.
For Russian speakers: Russian keeps the consonant (в книге, на руке); Belarusian does not. Other endings keep the original consonant: кнігі, кнігай, рукой. Verbs have their own alternations: see consonant changes in verb forms.
