Clock Time with Minutes

Think of the hour that is coming. At 4:10 you are ten minutes into the fifth hour: дзесяць хвілін на пятую. At 2:45, it is three o'clock minus a quarter: без чвэрці тры.

How It Works

1. The first half hour: на + ordinal.

  • 4:05 пяць хвілін на пятую
  • 4:10 дзесяць хвілін на пятую
  • 9:15 чвэрць на дзясятую
  • 2:30 палова на трэцюю, also палова трэцяй

2. The second half hour: без + genitive. The minutes go in the genitive after без, and the hour is an ordinary number:

  • 2:45 без чвэрці тры
  • 6:40 без дваццаці сем
  • 11:55 без пяці дванаццаць

3. Saying "at" a time. For whole hours, use а with the locative: а пятай гадзіне (see telling the time with а). For half past, say а палове на восьмую or а палове восьмай (at half past seven).

4. The digital style. Timetables and announcements often just read the numbers: чатырнаццаць трыццаць (14:30), шаснаццаць гадзін сорак пяць хвілін (16:45).

Tip: хвіліна (minute) follows the counting rules: адна хвіліна, дзве хвіліны, пяць хвілін. You may also hear мінута, but хвіліна is the usual Belarusian word.

  1. Цяпер дзесяць хвілін на пятую.

    It is ten past four now.

    Minutes are counted toward the fifth hour: на пятую.

  2. Ужо палова на трэцюю.

    It is already half past two.

    Half of the way to the third hour.

  3. Фільм пачынаецца а палове на восьмую.

    The film starts at half past seven.

    "At" half past: а палове.

  4. Цяпер без чвэрці тры.

    It is a quarter to three.

    Без + genitive чвэрці, then the hour as a number.

  5. Мы прыйшлі дадому без пяці дванаццаць.

    We got home at five to twelve.

    Пяць → без пяці.

  6. Гадзіннік паказваў чвэрць на дзясятую.

    The clock showed a quarter past nine.

    Чвэрць на дзясятую = 9:15.

Common Mistakes

  • Counting toward the hour that has already passed (intending 4:10).

    Цяпер дзесяць хвілін на чацвёртую.
    Цяпер дзесяць хвілін на пятую.

    Minutes are counted toward the coming hour. Дзесяць хвілін на чацвёртую means 3:10, so 4:10 is на пятую.

  • Leaving the minutes in the nominative after без.

    Цяпер без дзесяць пяць.
    Цяпер без дзесяці пяць.

    Без takes the genitive, so дзесяць becomes дзесяці.

  • Using a cardinal number after на.

    Цяпер дзесяць хвілін на пяць.
    Цяпер дзесяць хвілін на пятую.

    After на, the hour is a feminine ordinal: пятую, трэцюю, дзясятую.
