а + Hour
Telling the Time with А
А сёмай гадзіне means at seven o'clock. Belarusian names hours with ordinal numbers, like at the seventh hour.
How It Works
Asking the time. Ask Каторая гадзіна? (What time is it?) and answer with an ordinal in the nominative: Першая гадзіна (It is one o'clock), Другая гадзіна (It is two o'clock), Дзясятая (It is ten). See ordinal numbers.
Saying when. Use а with the locative. The ordinal takes the feminine ending -ай or -ой to match гадзіна, and гадзіна becomes гадзіне:
- а першай, а другой, а трэцяй, а чацвёртай, а пятай, а шостай
- а сёмай, а восьмай, а дзявятай, а дзясятай, аб адзінаццатай, а дванаццатай
The word гадзіне is often left out: Фільм пачынаецца а восьмай. To ask, say А якой гадзіне? or А каторай гадзіне? (At what time?) Noon and midnight have their own words: апоўдні (at noon), апоўначы (at midnight).
Before a vowel. Адзінаццатай starts with a vowel, so а becomes аб: аб адзінаццатай.
Russian patterns. Asking the clock time with Колькі часу? copies Russian сколько времени, and у сем гадзін copies в семь часов. Standard Belarusian says Каторая гадзіна? and а сёмай гадзіне. In Belarusian, колькі часу asks how long something lasts. See common Russianisms.
Minutes and half hours are covered in clock time with minutes.
