पै
But: पै
पै joins two ideas that pull apart.
How It Works
पै means but. It sits at the start of the second part.
| Sentence | Meaning |
|---|---|
| फ्लैट नीक अहै, पै हल्ला बहुत अहै। | The flat is nice, but it is noisy. |
| ऊ आवत अहै, पै जल्दी जाई। | He is coming, but he will leave soon. |
It is short and quick. You can use it to push back politely: पै हम सोचत अही... (but I think...).
Two similar words need care.
- पर means on or at, as in छत पर.
- मुला is an older word for but that you may hear in villages.
In Gonda and Rae Bareli, पै can also mean on. The lessons use पर for that meaning.
