घरे

At Home: घरे

Level 2Sounds Like gharē

A few place words add -े to mean at or to.

How It Works

Some everyday place words can end in -े. The ending already means at or to, so do not add मा, पर or का.

  • घरे (at home, home)
  • गाँवे (in the village)

Use it with a state or a movement: ऊ घरे अहै (he is at home), हम घरे जाब (I will go home), ऊ गाँवे रहत अहै (he lives in the village).

With other place words, use a postposition: दुकान पर, सहर मा, स्कूल मा.

Many speakers also say घर पर. Both are normal; घरे is shorter and common in the east. Compare -न (बहुवचन) for plurals.

Hindi says घर पर or घर में; Awadhi also has घरे.

Examples (5)

    नाहीं goes before the helper.

    गाँवे means in the village.

  5. सात बजे तक घरे आव।

    ऊ घरे मा अहै।
    ऊ घरे अहै।

    The -े already means at.
