অৱশ্যে / অৱশ্যেই

Of Course and However

Level 5Sounds Like araśyē / araśyē'i

অৱশ্যে means “however” or “of course”: জোনালীক অৱশ্যে আগতেই খবৰ দিয়া হৈছিল “Jonali, of course, had been told beforehand”.

How It Works

অৱশ্যে is a small word. It does not change the verb and it does not need a comma. Writers use it to add a point that limits or completes what they just said.

FormMeaningExample
অৱশ্যে“however, though, of course”গুৱাহাটীত অৱশ্যে বৰষুণ বেছি হৈছিল “In Guwahati, however, it rained more”
অৱশ্যেই“certainly, of course”অৱশ্যেই মই কাইলৈ আপোনাক ফোন কৰিম “Of course I will call you tomorrow”

Look at where the word stands. In ইংগিতটোৰ অৱশ্যে তাৎপৰ্য আছিল “the sign did have a meaning, though”, অৱশ্যে follows ইংগিতটোৰ “of the sign”, and that is the word the writer wants you to notice.

Both forms are common in written Assamese, in histories and school books. The ending -ই on অৱশ্যেই is the same small ending that stresses a word elsewhere.
