মোৰ / তোমাৰ / আপোনাৰ

My and Your

Level 1Sounds Like mōra / tōmāra / āpōnāra

মোৰ is “my”. তোমাৰ and আপোনাৰ are “your” for a friend and for someone you respect.

How It Works

These words show who owns something. They come before the noun and do not change for the noun.

PersonWordExample
I (মই)মোৰমোৰ নাম ৰিনা। “My name is Rina.”
you, friend (তুমি)তোমাৰতোমাৰ নাম কি? “What is your name?”
you, respect (আপুনি)আপোনাৰআপোনাৰ নাম কি? “What is your name?”

The words do not look like মই, তুমি and আপুনি plus -ৰ. Learn each one as it is.

All three can also stand alone at the end of a sentence to mean “mine” or “yours”: এই কিতাপখন মোৰ। “This book is mine.”

Use the same address level for the owner word that you use for the verb. A teacher is addressed with আপুনি, so a student asks about আপোনাৰ ঘৰ.

Examples (5)

  1. মোৰ নাম ৰিনা।

    My name is Rina.

মোৰ stands before the noun নাম “name”.

  2. তোমাৰ নাম কি?

    What is your name?

তোমাৰ is for a friend or a younger person.

  3. আপোনাৰ নাম কি?

    What is your name?

আপোনাৰ is for someone you respect.

  4. আপোনাৰ মেকুৰীটো ক’লা।

    Your cat is black.

The noun is a definite thing, so it takes -টো, and আপোনাৰ stands before it.

  5. এই কিতাপখন মোৰ।

    This book is mine.

মোৰ can end the sentence and mean “mine”.

Common Mistakes

  • Typing the Bengali spelling of the word.

    তোমার নাম কি?
    তোমাৰ নাম কি?

The Assamese word has the letter ৰ in it. A Bengali keyboard gives a look-alike letter, so check the letter when you type.
