Our, His and Her

Level 1Sounds Like āmāra / tāra / tā'ira / tē'ōm̐ra

আমাৰ is “our”. তাৰ and তাইৰ are “his” and “her”. তেওঁৰ is “his” or “her” with respect.

How It Works

Each owner word comes from a person word and shows who owns the noun after it.

PersonOwner wordMeaning
আমিআমাৰour
সিতাৰhis
তাইতাইৰher
তেওঁতেওঁৰhis or her, with respect

Assamese has one word, তেওঁৰ, for a respected man or woman. Use it for a teacher or a person you do not know well.

Kinship words often change with the owner. After মোৰ the word for “mother” is মা, and after তাৰ, তাইৰ or তেওঁৰ it is usually মাক, as in তাইৰ মাক. A later lesson explains kinship words in full.

Examples (4)

  1. আমাৰ চেনি নাই।

    We have no sugar.

আমাৰ stands before the noun চেনি “sugar”, and নাই means “there is none”.

  2. তাইৰ মাক বজাৰলৈ যায়।

Her mother goes to the market.

তাইৰ is “her” and the noun is মাক.

  3. তেওঁৰ ঘৰ ডাঙৰ।

    His house is big.

তেওঁৰ is “his” for a man you respect.

  4. তাৰ কলম আছে।

    He has a pen.

তাৰ is “his” for a boy or a man you know well. “His pen is there” is how Assamese says “he has a pen”.
